Elbow Dislocation

An elbow dislocation is caused by a fall on an outstretched hand with the elbow in a position of hyperextension or a sever twist while it is flexed. The signs and symptoms are deformity, severe pain and disability. This is a traumatic injury with possible complications such as injury to the median and/or radial nerves as well as major blood vessels, and is often associated with a fracture of the radial head. Treatment for this injury includes immobilization, cold application, and immediate referral to a physician. The elbow should be reduced as soon as possible to prevent prolonged derangement of the soft tissue.

Forearm Fracture

The forearm can be fractured as a result of a blow or fall on an outstretched hand. The signs and symptoms of a forearm fracture and pain, swelling, deformity, and disability. The affected limb should be immobilized or splinted ad cold applied, followed by referral to a physician.

Lateral Epicondylytis (Tennis Elbow) and Medial Epicondylytis (Pitcher’s and Golfer’s Elbow)

These conditions are associated with irritation and inflammation of affected muscle insertions caused by repetitive microtrauma. The signs and symptoms are aching pain that is accompanied by weakness and point tenderness. These conditions are managed by resting, using cold application, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, rehabilitation, and instruction on proper skill technique.
